The Genesis theme framework is built on a simple vanilla blog-type parent theme, and can be extended with the use of child themes. Each child theme will come with it’s own home file, which will make extending the parent theme very easy to do. It will also have it’s own functions file as well.

After doing an automatic upgrade through the WordPress admin control panel, I discovered that Events Calendar 6.6 was accidentally released as stable.

“The very unstable development version of Events Calendar was showing as stable.  This was a mistake made in the readme file.  Please be aware of this.  If you auto upgrade when prompted then you will need to revert to 6.5.2.1 if you are not wanting to do some testing.  Our apologies.”

The release was so unstable I needed to revert to the prvious version of Events Calendar (even opening it in IE 7 was a guaranteed crash, Widgets were disabled, etc.), problem was I couldn’t locate the previous release!

I searched the Events calendar Website, The WordPres Plugin Site, and the web for hours before finially locating the previous release.

So I’m posting events-calendar.6.5.2.1 here for others that might need to revert to the stable release.

This adventure is yet another example of why you should always backup your database and core files prior to upgrading your WordPress install or updating your WordPress plugins.

Mistakes are made, and sometimes you will need to revert, so it’s always a good idea to search the web for issues on a WordPress upgrades or plugin updates.

I regularily suggest my clients and frieends keep their WordPress blogs up to date. Updates keep things running smoothly, fix issues with browser and sometimes plugin compatability, and protect your blog from vulnerabilities like woirms that leave pornagraphic spam in your blog posts.

I’ve had to clean some of that “Invisible Spam” for clients after Google blocked their site for malicious software. Basically the worm had placed some code in the post that can’t be seen in the browser. This code when decrypted was a link to porn sites. The idea being, in this case, to increase rankings for the porn site.

I’ve also fixed blogs where the code was’t concealed. A frantic call from a client whose blog had several pictures of – well let’s just say it wasn’t good PR for a blog on Women’s issues.

Register for an API key and download a plugin. Once installed, After the Deadline adds a button that lets you check spelling, style, and grammar in supported applications.

Question: I want to use WordPress for a membership site, but most of the solutions I find are way too complicated and don\’t have the functionality I\’m looking for. Is there a solution that is easy to use, doesn’t have lots of recurring fees and allows me to have different user levels?

Answer: There is a great plug-in by Synergy Software Group that is low cost and comes with free lifetime upgrades. It also has an add-on to connect with Authorize. net, Your Pay or First Data payment gateways (you will need a secure certificate installed on your web server). The best part thing about their plug-in is that it free upgrades for life, only costs $29 (payment gateway plug-in $10), and they will install it for you for only $50.

Compare that to aMember which requires continued renewals for updates, or VisionGate Portal that\’s $100 per month!

Though I like the syntax highlighter overall, the indenting makes it difficult to use and the code can copy in strange ways.

If you are using WordPress there is an easy way to have your database backed up with WordPress Database Backup, a free plugin by Austin Matzko will backup your WordPress Database and email a copy to you!
